Cutters Focus On Sea Eagles Clash

MACKAY Cutters coach Paul Bramley says his team will head to the Sunshine Coast with a focus on securing another two competition points, regardless of what happens 24 hours earlier in the ABC televised clash between Burleigh and the Northern Pride.

Burleigh needs a win or draw against the in-form Pride at Pizzey Park to be any hope of snaring the sixth and final position in the Intrust Super Cup play-offs.

The Cutters and Bears are both locked on 23 competition points but the Mackay team holds all the aces because of their superior for and against record.

However, the pressure would be firmly on the Cutters in Sunday’s away clash against the high-flying Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles if Burleigh ends the Pride’s eight-match winning streak.

“We’re not looking at any other scenario – we have to go there and win,” Bramley said.

Although the Sea Eagles have already booked their spot in the finals, they can still finish as high as third or as low as fifth.

But no matter what happens this weekend, the Sea Eagles will enter their second consecutive finals series with an air of confidence after thrashing the Burleigh Bears 35-6 yesterday.

With halfback Daly Cherry-Evans in complete control, the Sea Eagles were too strong for the Bears in the round 21 clash.

Dennis Sandow, Tyrone Coppedge, Maa Ruua, Terence Seu Seu, Jamie Buhrer and Jon Muir scored for the visitors, while Sandow kicked five goals.

The Cutters weren’t quite as impressive in their 30-6 win over Ipswich on Saturday night.

But the home team did enough against a Jets outfit that made too many handling errors.

Bramley conceded he was concerned about facing the Jets after learning of the mid-week coaching change that saw head coach Glenn Lazarus resign and the Walker brothers – Ben and Shane – take the reins.

But Bramley’s fears amounted to little as the Jets repeatedly turned over the football.

“They just do not respect the footy,” the Cutters coach said.

Luke Fatnowna grabbed two tries for the Cutters, while fellow forwards Darren Griffiths, Neil Budworth and Jardine Bobongie were also impressive.

Bobongie was playing his first match in more than a month after recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

“He came off the bench and provided a lot of energy,” Bramley said.

MACKAY CUTTERS 30 (Luke Fatnowna 2, Chris Giumelli, Todd Seymour, Darren Griffiths tries; Josh Hannay 5 goals) def IPSWICH JETS 6 (Aaron Cannings try; Jacob Ling goal) at Mackay Juniors.

SUNSHINE COAST SEA EAGLES 35 (Dennis Sandow, Tyrone Coppedge, Maa Ruua, Terence Seu Seu, Jamie Buhrer, Jon Muir tries; Dennis Sandow 5 goals; Daly Cherry-Evans field goal) def BURLEIGH BEARS 6 (Nathan Ross try; Nick Parfitt goal) at Pizzey Park.
