TWEED HEADS v NORTHS DEVILS
Saturday, June 12 @ Ned Byrne Field, 2pm* live on ABC TV
Norths will look to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season when they travel across the border for a showdown with the Tweed. The Devils showed plenty of spirit to fight their way back from a 22-point half-time deficit last weekend against Souths Logan. But Kevin Carmichael’s team ultimately came up short and the Devils mentor will be hoping for a better start against the dangerous Tweed outfit. Tweed has lost its last two matches on the road and will welcome a return to their familiar home surroundings for the ABC televised clash. Norths have not won at Tweed since 2004 when they prevailed 34-10 in round 19. On the milestone front, Tweed star Brad Davis became the eighth player to score 700 points in the Queensland Cup last week. He has now scored 705 points from 101 matches.
EASTS TIGERS v MACKAY CUTTERS
Saturday, June 12 @ Langlands Park, 2pm
Broncos flyer Denan Kemp has been named in the Tigers line-up for their must win clash against the in-form Cutters. Kemp’s return to Red Hill has been disrupted by injury but he’ll get his chance to press for an NRL recall here. Kemp has scored 32 tries in his 41 Queensland Cup games for Toowoomba, Aspley and Norths. Kemp’s speed on the flanks should add some much needed spark to a Tigers outfit that was outplayed by the Ipswich Jets last weekend. A second consecutive loss at home would almost certainly end the Tigers’ hopes of figuring in this year’s finals. Easts forward Cameron Durnford plays his 200th Queensland Cup match. He becomes the seventh player to reach the double ton after stints with the Gold Coast, Logan, Wynnum and Easts since 1998. Former Queensland Maroons representative Josh Hannay has been named at five-eighth for his second appearance with the Cutters. Hannay made a strong debut in Mackay’s 48-12 victory over the Comets last weekend. Mackay holds down sixth spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder and could yet leapfrog the Burleigh Bears into fifth at the end of this weekend.
IPSWICH JETS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS
Saturday, June 12 @ North Ipswich Reserve, 6pm
The Jets will be without in-form hooker Michael Fisher for the round 13 clash after scans on Wednesday revealed the Noosa product had broken his hand. Fisher has been one of Ipswich’s best players in the opening half of the season but the Jets are likely to be without his services for the next six weeks. Callum Waldrum is poised to come into the 17, although Jets coach Glenn Lazarus could yet make additional changes. Ipswich is coming off a much needed 18-14 victory over the Easts Tigers. However, the Dolphins are likely to be a much tougher proposition than the Tigers now that they have steadied the ship with a solid 26-18 win over the Tweed. In the first meeting between Ipswich and Redcliffe this year, the Dolphins registered an easy 40-10 win. The Dolphins also hold the edge in the head-to-head battle, winning 21 of the 30 games.
SOUTHS LOGAN v BURLEIGH BEARS
Sunday, June 13 @ Davies Park, 2pm
Burleigh milestone man Nick Parfitt registers his 150th game in the Queensland Cup. After a mixed 2009 season, Parfitt is getting back to the form that saw him become a regular in Country and Queensland Residents representative sides. Last week the former Bronco scored a try and kicked four goals in Burleigh’s 20-6 win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls. Burleigh coach Mark Gee will now look for his side to show some consistency and produce a repeat 80 minute effort against a formidable Souths Logan team. The Magpies have won a club record eight games in succession to lead the competition after 12 rounds. In a statistic that would please any coach, the Magpies completed their opening 19 sets against Norths last weekend. But they only completed one of their opening eight sets of the second half as the Devils stormed back into the game. Souths Logan eventually proved too strong, but their untidy start to the second half is a timely wake up call for the premiership front-runners.
WYNNUM MANLY v NORTHERN PRIDE
Sunday, June 13 @ BMD Kougari Oval, 3pm
A week after suffering their biggest loss in the Queensland Cup, the Northern Pride heads to BMD Kougari Oval with plenty to prove. The Pride was humiliated last weekend by the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles, who ran in 64 unanswered points. All eyes will be on how the Pride responds against the Seagulls, who were a touch disappointing themselves against Burleigh last weekend. Experienced centre David Seage is set to return to the Seagulls line-up after missing the 14-point loss to the Burleigh Bears. Seage’s inclusion means Jon Grieve, a member of the Sunshine Coast’s premiership-winning team last season, moves to the interchange bench. The Seagulls currently sit in fourth spot on 15 competition points, while the Pride is in eighth spot, one win adrift of the top six.
CENTRAL COMETS v SUNSHINE COAST
Sunday, June 13 @ Browne Park, 3pm
Key Comets forward Alan Rothery registers his 50th Queensland Cup match in this Browne Park clash. Rothery has enjoyed previous stints with Wests and Toowoomba but the Rockhampton junior is now right at home with the Comets. Rothery’s team is currently experiencing a mixed season, with their consistent form of 2009 so far deserting them in 2010. The Comets won their opening two games of the new season, but have since tasted success on just two occasions to be sitting four points outside of the top six. The Sunshine Coast will start warm favourites in this match after their massive win over the Pride last weekend. Fullback Dennis Sandow needs only seven more points to overhaul Trent Hodkinson (144) as the Sunshine Coast’s top point scorer.
