TROUND 16 of the Intrust Super Cup sees the STM Cutters take on Burleigh Bears this Saturday July 10 at the Mackay JRL grounds. Burleigh have won their last two games while the Cutters are looking to bounce back from last week’s narrow 2 point loss to competition heavyweights Norths Devils. Even though they are coming off a loss the Cutters will take plenty of confidence out of that game as they almost beat the Devils with an under-strength team that wasn’t firing as it has been.
Injuries and NRL call-ups have forced a number of changes to this week’s line up. Grant Rovelli and Arana Taumata have been called up to the Cowboys team to play the Eels on Monday night but there are a number of quality players returning to the side to make up for the loss. Representative players Donald Malone, Tyson Martin and Justin Hunt will all be back on deck and should add plenty of venom to the team’s attack as well as livewire fullback Shannon Gallant who has spent the last few weeks in the NRL. Local Wests Tigers five-eighth Michael Meigan also comes back in after strong form in the Skills Training Cup.
Burleigh jumped above the Cutters into 5th spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder following last week’s results. A win against the Bears on Saturday would see the Cutters take 5th spot back and keep Sunshine Coast and the Northern Pride, who are only two points behind, at Bay. The Cutters belted the Bears when both teams met earlier in the year and although that may give our boys an edge in confidence Coach Paul Bramley expects to see a tougher and much more focused side this time around and he will be making sure that his troops are ready for the challenge.
Tomorrow’s game is back to a 5.30pm timeslot which is perfect for anyone wanting to attend the Mackay Cup Races and then kick on at the Cutters game. As an added incentive, if you present your race ticket at the gate at the JRL grounds you will receive half price entry!
The Skills Training A-grade competition went to another level last weekend with some of the best games so far this season. With the business end of the season fast approaching Souths win over Magpies, Brothers win over Moranbah and Whitsundays last gasp victory over Wests were all games played in semi-final style football.
This weekend we see all games being played on Sunday with Norths at home to Souths. Magpies are at home to Whitsunday with the Ladies kicking off proceedings at noon. Wests are taking on the Miners in what could be a season shaping game with both teams locked for 5th spot and Wests appearing to have the easier run home to the finals. At Leprechaun Park we have Brothers taking on Sarina in what promises to be a physical and entertaining game.
In the Meng Group U18 competition there are Brothers, Moranbah, Magpies and Wests in a mighty tussle for two spots in the semi-finals and the last few rounds will produce some desperate must win football from these teams.
The NQ Cleaning and Paints reserve grade competition is even tighter with 7 teams fighting for 5 spots in the finals. All reserve grade sides will be putting their strongest side on the paddock to ensure a spot in the finals.
Artie Beetson and Tom Raudonikis were in Mackay this week and attended a State of Origin function at Magpies Sky’s Function centre and helped attendees have a great night and raise much needed funds for the local PCYC.
