MACKAY Cutters ball player Todd Seymour helped fashion a resounding 48-12 victory over adversaries Central Comets at South Mackay.

The 22-year-old, who has been captain at times this year, has showed steady improvement at the club, but stepped it up a notch yesterday in the absence of noted playmaker Grant Rovelli.

“He was outstanding,” Cutters coach Paul Bramley said after the elusive halfback had a prominent hand in six of nine tries scored by the hosts, who are unbeaten at the Junior Rugby League grounds this season.

“He controlled the game from start to finish and he’s shown he’s mature enough now. There’s a (Queensland Country) selector here looking for halves – Todd’s a chance,” Bramley said after the side’s third straight win.

Seymour’s passing and kicking game was impressive in the round 12 Intrust Super Cup clash and Bramley said the 185cm, 88kg linchpin “understands his role”.

Bramley said there were up to 10 Cutters in the mix for Country selection: “We’re not going to have that many, but we’re going to have a few in there and we deserve it. We’re sitting in the top six.”

He lamented a lapse in the second half but the STM Cutters were otherwise in fine form against their arch-rivals, securing victory in the Meng Group Intercity Challenge.

“I thought Josh Hannay had a couple of good touches,” Bramley said of the former Origin player after he made his Cutters debut off the bench.

Justin Hunt’s remarkable 20 point haul (two tries and six conversions) took his season tally to 110 points, 16 points beyond the club record.

Dual-registered North Queensland Cowboy Donald Malone was again impressive on the wing, bagging a brace of tries and creating plenty of opportunities.

“I say it every week, but he’s got to be a chance (of a Cowboys call-up),” Bramley said.

Malone was first to score yesterday, latching on to a well-directed kick from Seymour.

Seymour’s second lofted kick at the in-goal was rewarded with a try to Chris Giumelli after good lead-up work from Neil Budworth, Isaak Ah Mau and Ben Harris.

A try to Comets fullback Matt Minto cut the deficit to two, but the Cutters took control with three tries leading up to half-time.

Repeat sets on the Comets’ line led to a four-pointer to Malone on the left, via Liam McDonald and Tyson Martin. Then Budworth’s pass found Seymour who again kicked for Giumelli, knocking the ball back to centre Michael Comerford to score. Hunt extended the lead to 18 by half-time after a good ball from Peter Quinn and a sharp run from Malone.

Then Hannay, at five-eighth, passed to Hunt who raced through some limp defence to score his second.

When a Seymour grubber couldn’t be contained by Comets rake Ian Webster, the halfback was there to score. The scoreline ballooned to 40-6 when Seymour claimed another four-pointer following a Comets error.

Central prop Alan Rothery restored some pride when he charged through from 15m but the Cutters had the last laugh when the ball went through Hunt, Seymour and Darren Griffiths for Jardine Bobongie to score.

Central’s Marc Fickling was placed on report for a tackle late in proceedings. Mackay centre Martin will nurse an ankle injury through the week before the Cutters tackle 11th-placed Easts in Brisbane on Saturday.
