Line-up Shuffle for Comets Clash

THERE are a couple of changes to the Skills Training Mackay Cutters line-up for the local derby against the Central Comets. Pocket rocket Shannon Gallant is out with a rib injury and in a timely return leading point-scorer Justin Hunt is back to take his place.

Grant Rovelli was named to play with the Cutters, but has played his way into a Cowboys jersey with a man-of-the-match performance against the Sunshine Coast. Jardine Bobongie will go into the starting side at five-eighth.

Former Cowboys and Origin star Josh Hannay will make his Cutters debut from the bench at South Mackay on Sunday.

Josh has had a disrupted start to the year due to a couple of minor injuries, but he is running on all cylinders now and is jumping out of his skin to play his first game with the Cutters.

The Cutters are looking for three wins in a row and the possibility of jumping into fifth spot with Burleigh only one point above them on the ladder. This game has the added significance of being the decider for the Meng Group Intercity Challenge, created between the two clubs when the Cutters entered the Queensland Cup in 2008.

Barry Vella from the Meng Group came up with the idea in the hope of creating a strong rivalry between the two teams and he created a perpetual shield that would go to the victor.

The Cutters won the shield in 2008 only to lose it to the Comets in 2009. At one game apiece so far this season (including a pre-season trial match) the winner of this game will take home the shield and bragging rights between the two cities.

Action aplenty

SUNDAY will be a massive day of rugby league down at the JRL grounds with Souths taking on Sarina in three grades plus the semi-finals and final of the women’s state titles all being played prior to the Cutters game at 3pm.

There are seven games of footy in total, all quality games. The table has been set and there is no excuse for not coming down to the JRL grounds this Sunday and feast on the some great action.

In a week that saw plenty of mud thrown at league from one faceless person, the games last weekend showed what a strong competition we have and the long-time football followers tell us the Brothers-Souths clash was the best game of club football they can remember seeing.

This weekend sees a full weekend of league. Tomorrow Moranbah and Magpies clash at Moranbah and Whitsunday takes on Brothers in Proserpine. Smarting from last weekend’s loss, the Brothers boys will be out for revenge, which will make for a great game.

On Sunday Wests and Norths play at Walkerston while the Sarina-Souths clash on the Cutters card.

Just when you thought the weekend could not contain anymore football, the Queensland Women’s Championships will be held over the weekend with games tomorrow being held at Shark Park starting at Midday and the finals being played at the Junior League grounds from 9am Sunday.

Origin experience

LOCAL lad Zac Manning has been selected to be a ball boy for the second State of Origin game.

This is a great thrill for Zac and his parents and a culmination of some hard lobbying by Greg Sutherland.

Grant Rovelli was named to play with the Cutters but has played his way into a Cowboys jersey with a man-of-the-match performance against the Sunshine Coast.
