WHEN winger Shannon
Hegarty crossed for a try in
the opening few minutes of
Saturday night’s game, the
signs were good for the
Mackay Cutters to notch up
another Queensland Cup
victory.
But that converted try
turned out to be the last of
the Cutters’ points as they
slipped to a 15-6 loss to the
Burleigh Bears at the
Mackay JRL grounds.
It was the Cutters’ first
defeat this season after
they started the year with
three consecutive wins.
Coach Shane Muspratt
said his side had plenty of
ball in the physical match
but hadn’t made the most
of their last tackle options.
“It was one of those
games where we couldn’t
get into a rhythm in attack,”
he said.
However Muspratt was
again pleased with the
Cutters’ defensive efforts.
After the half-time
scores were locked at 6-all,
the Cutters were still in the
game with 20 minutes to
go, trailing 12-6.
But as the clock ticked, a
field goal from Nick Parfitt
with five minutes left,
followed by a penalty goal,
clinched the win for the
Bears.
For the opposition, Muspratt
thought Burleigh’s
backline was particularly
dangerous.
“Their back five, their
centres and wingers, really
got them out of trouble,” he
said.
“(Winger) Kaine Manihera’s
dummy half running
was outstanding.”
Muspratt thought Burleigh
“probably adapted to
the conditions a little better than us”.
Meanwhile, the Cutters
and Cowboys will wait to
find out the extent of a
knee injury to centre Donald
Malone, who left the
field in the first half.
Mitchell Achurch also
had a facial cut that was
likely to require stitches.
Burleigh Bears 15
(Brent McConnell, Daniel
Isaac tries; Nick Parfitt 3
goals; Nick Parfitt field
goal) defeated Mackay
Cutters (Shannon Hegarty
try; Daniel Abraham goal).
At Cairns, Northern
Pride beat Mackay’s under
18 Cutters 44-6 and the
under 16s went down 24-22.
